More Text Access Via the Web

Soon after Google announced its digitization effort with five libraries, the Internet Archive announced its initiative. Eleven international libraries will provide textual materials to the archive.

Some may see this as competition to the Google effort, but I really like the statement near the end of their announcement:

“We are encouraging of these [commercial] efforts and hope most of these materials will be also available through Text Archives, which would be an alternative and complimentary means of getting to these digital materials. Deeper and less commercial access can augment the commercial offerings.”

I whole-heartedly agree!
