SML – Standard for Exchanging Operating Information

BEA Systems, BMC Software, Cisco Systems, Dell, EMC, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, and Sun Microsystems have come together around a standard that will allow devices to exchange operating system data, such as performance data/problems or security requirements.

The basis for this XML standard, called SML (Service Modeling Language), is Microsoft’s Systems Definition Model.  Apparently, many of these companies have similar projects.  In order to allow data to flow more freely between devices, they decided to standardize on one — in this case, Microsoft’s — model.

They will soon start the standardization process by submitting SML to a standards body.
