University of Texas and Tera-Ops
The University of Texas has, for three years, been working on a chip that will process one trillion operations (one tera-op) per second. This project, called TRIPS (Tera-op Reliable Intelligently adaptive Processing System), will be shown to the public this week. A partnership between UT, IBM’s Austin Research Lab, and DARPA, the goal is to create a chip based on the TRIPS architecture by 2012.
You can see the team and a 2006 prototype above. This project would result in supercomputer speed in a single chip!
