Public Libraries Need Computers

The latest study from Bertot and McClure, the 2007 Public Library Funding & Technology Access study, has provided some preliminary findings:

  • Almost all public libraries provide Internet access (99.5%)
  • The average public library building has 10.7 computers
  • Most public libraries do not have enough publicly available Internet workstations (58.8% reported too few at various times of the day; 18.7% reported too few consistently; about 20% reported a sufficient number consistently)
  • 54.2% of public libraries provide wireless access
  • 29.2% of public libraries provide Internet access higher than 1.5 mbps
