The next version for USB is available now, but probably won’t be seen by consumers until 2010. USB 3.0, also called “USB SuperSpeed,” is focused on speed — it should be about 10 times faster than the USB 2.0 standard.
To give you an idea of how fast this is, these numbers from from a slide from Microsoft. The time it would take to transfer a 25gb high definition movie:
- USB 1.0 — 9.3 hours
- USB 2.0 — 13.9 minutes
- USB 3.0 — 70 seconds
The 3.0 connector will not change, but will allow information to flow in both directions, not just in one as in USB 2.0.
