Peak Internet Rush Hour

When is the Internet the slowest?  Friday evening?  Weekdays when school lets out?  Actually, it’s Sunday evening between 5 and 6pm — at least in the United Kingdom.  Ofcom, the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries, posted a detailed research report in January 2009 concerning broadband speeds in the UK and consumer’s experiences.

One of their findings is that the slowest speed on the Internet in the UK is Sunday evening between 5pm and 6pm. Interesting . . . People being people, I’m assuming it’s the same here in the United States.

Another finding which may not be a surprise to anyone — actual average speeds were 49% of the “headline” speed, or the speed that was advertised.
